5th grade Keith Haring Project

The 5th graders started their week in art by learning about the great artist Keith Haring. We talked about the elements of art and about his life.

We looked at Haring's Crack is Wack mural and talked about how we can use art to inspire others and give advice. They each picked a phrase that they thought would make others who saw their work feel good or give them advice.

Here the students are at work:

4th Grade "Eye" Am Color Wheel Project

4th grade started their first week in art by learning about the element of color! We learned about primary colors and secondary colors to mix their own colors.
They loved it when the colors changed. It's like magic!

Here they are at work:

After the color wheels were done the students transformed them into an eye. I saw this awesome project online and decided to tweak it a little. After the eye was done the students wrote an adjective that described themselves in each of the colors. Little play on words "Eye" am color wheel!

Here are some wonderful finished examples. Check out who our 4th grades are:

3rd Grade Superheroes Project

Third grade's first week in art consisted of talking about how they are now in the upper grades! We talked about how things are going to be different (state mandated testing) and that is ok! They began by making themselves into a superhero. I told them that they are like superheroes, because they will try their best and persevere through anything.

Here are the artists at work:

These are some of the great examples of their hard work!

2nd Grade- Todd Parr project

For the first week of second grade art we learned about the elements of art and focused on color. We also read the book It's Ok To Be Different by Todd Parr for inspiration. We talked about being individuals and the style of Todd Parr's art.
I was inspired by Cassie Stephens, an awesome art teacher, for this lesson. Check out her project at https://cassiestephens.blogspot.com/2016/01/in-art-room-its-okay-to-be-different.html

Students first painted their own paper. They had so much fun mixing colors!
When the papers were all nice and dry it was time to cut. This definitely put second graders to practice their cutting and gluing skills.

First week of 1st Grade Art- Only One You Project

My 1st graders had a lot of fun learning about different elements of art and applying them to their artwork.
We read the book Only One You by Linda Kranz for inspiration. We talked about how it is a new year and we are all different, there is only one of each of us. And that is great!

Students learned how to draw their fish and after we talked about lines they had the chance to decorate it however they wished.
Students used either crayons or markers to color them in.

Finally, we learned about the element of Value and making tints, so the students could paint the water.

These were only a few of the happy results:

First week for Kindergarten

Kindergarten's first week in art class was fun and artistic! Students learned about the elements of art and began to apply them in their art work.
We practiced creating lines, using scissors, glue, crayons, markers, color pencils and finally tempera paint!

These little artists began by making a silly line person, so they could practice making lines. I saw this idea on Pintrest and wanted students to give it a try. They thought it was silly too. Check out some examples below.

This student was thinking outside the box! (or circle) and added more interesting lines to his work.

Students also learned about Piet Mondrian, primary colors, and created their own artwork. These are just some of the awesome examples of their work.

By a student in Ms. Sidel's class.
The students had the opportunity to choose their media (crayons, color pencils, markers) and practiced gluing and cutting the black strips to fit their paper.

I love how this student decided to leave the center white!
Now see the artists at work while practicing using a paintbrush and tempera cakes.
